FORT POLK, La. – Soldiers and leaders from across 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, came together for a Sexual Harassment Assault Response and Prevention Pancake Breakfast at the Patriot Inn, April 3, 2014. The breakfast was part of the Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
President Barack Obama decreed April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month March 31, 2014, through presidential proclamation. SHARP representatives Army wide are coming up with creative ways to get the Army’s message out. Soldiers pledged to step up to stop sexual assault.
The Pancake Breakfast began with attendees signing the SHARP pledge to do their part to stop sexual assault and contribute to the best work environment the Army can offer.
“SHARP is important to the Army because Soldiers and family members should have freedom to serve in the best capacity they can. When you have sexual assault in the Army it violates the honor code that we as Soldiers hold ourselves to, said Sgt. Maj. Jabari Williams, operations Sgt. Maj., 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th BCT, 10th Mtn. Div. “I attend SHARP events to show my support and because sexual assault happened in my family.”
Brandy Goins, the guest speaker and, 4th BCT, 10th Mtn. Div. victim advocate, explained her involvement with sexual assault awareness and went on to tell her story of being sexually assaulted.
“When someone tells their own story it is hard … no matter how many times you tell the story it never gets easier. I tell my story because as I went through my assault, I felt defeated, I felt like I didn’t have a voice, but SHARP is changing that,” said Brandy Goins, “SHARP is changing the culture of the Army by holding people accountable for their actions.”
