MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Combat engineers gathered to enjoy a day of fun and competition at the annual Saint Patrick’s Day Engineer Field Meet at the Marine Corps Engineer School aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, March 13.

Marines with 8th Engineer Support Battalion, 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion, Marine Wing Support Squadron-272, Marine Wing Support Squadron-273, as well as the students and staff at the engineer school participated in the event.

“(The Saint Patrick’s Day Engineer Field Meet) is a chance to have all of the engineer units in the Camp Lejeune area come together for some competition,” said Maj. Michelle Macander, the operations officer with Marine Corps Engineer School. “It brings camaraderie within our community.”

Marine engineers gather and celebrate annually near Saint Patrick’s Day because Saint Patrick is the patron saint of engineers.

The event gave participants an opportunity to interact with old peers and continue to build unity within the engineer community, said Macander.

Some events displayed the Saint Patrick’s Day spirit, such as the Blarney Stone Toss, while others were traditional field meet events, like the tug-of-war. Some activities, like, the stake driving relay, showcased some skills engineers use day-to-day.

Pfc. Michael Dillard, a student with Marine Corps Engineer School, enjoyed watching the backhoe loader pull, where a team of 15 Marines pull the vehicle as quickly as possible. He was impressed to see the teams work together to pull the heavy machine.

However, not all games involved feats of strength or agility, Engineer Idol gave the musically inclined an opportunity to showcase their skills. They could choose to perform “Ice, Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice, “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred, “Can’t Touch This” by MC Hammer and “Barbie Girl” by Aqua. Performers were judged on style, vocals and dance.

“These events help us keep our morale up,” said Lance Cpl. Jonathan Buss, a heavy equipment mechanic with 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion. “It’s good to see how everyone in this community is close. It’s important to have gatherings like this to keep us united.”

The units earned a half point for each event they competed in and five points for placing 1st in an event, three points for placing 2nd and one point for placing 3rd. The Marines of 2nd Combat Engineer Battalion were the champions of this year’s Saint Patrick’s Day Engineer Field Meet with 41.5 points, followed by Marine Wing Support Squadron 272 with 40 points and Marine Corps Engineer School with 39.5 points.
