News: Press Release: Marine, New York City native rescues man after deadly gas explosion

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A Marine with Transportation and Support Company, Combat Logistics Battalion 2, 2nd Marine Logistics Group was recently recognized for his actions after a gas leak explosion in New York City, March 12.

Sgt. Rasheem M. Thomas, 26, a native of New York City and landing support specialist, was home visiting family when he heard the explosion. He immediately ran toward the chaos that was unfolding and let instinct take over.

While a few individuals were removing debris from a car, Thomas made his way into the vehicle where he cut the seatbelt in order to remove the injured man from the vehicle and bring him to safety.

Thomas joined the Marine Corps in October, 2010. He has deployed twice in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Afghanistan. His awards include two Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, two Navy Unit Citation ribbon’s, two Sea Service Deployment ribbons, one NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal in support of Afghanistan, one Combat Action Ribbon, the National Defense Medal and Global War on Terrorism Medal.
