    34th Division Sustainment Brigade

KUWAIT NAVAL BASE, Kuwait - The 605th Transportation Detachment of Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii assumed responsibility of boat operations from the 1099th Trans. Det. of Fort Eutis, Va., after a transfer of authority ceremony aboard the U.S. Army Vessel SP/4 James A. Loux (LSV-6), Feb. 19 at the Kuwait Naval Base, Kuwait.

“Our mission here was to move [heavy expanded mobility tactical truck] fueler along with many other supplies along with providing humanitarian aid throughout the region,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Clinton Smith executive officer with the 1099th Trans. Det. out of Fort Eustis, Va.

Smith said the unit was responsible for moving more than 4,000 tons of cargo by sea during their deployment.

Chief Warrant Officer 4 Bill Sherman, commander of the 1099th Trans. Det. said his crew has completed many sea operations throughout the region.

Sherman said his crew is accustomed to long trips starting with their deployment by traveling by boat from Virginia. While conducting missions some trips required their crew to do a couple 15 day stretches and a 19 day mission at sea said Sherman.

“We are handing over a great boat and the incoming guys are a great crew, and I expect them to have just as much success if not more than we did,” said Smith. “This boat is a lot better now than when we received it and all the maintenance concerns have been fixed. Everything is laid out and ready to go for the 605th.”

The 605th Trans. Det. has a long history dating back to April 16, 1988 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The 605th is no stranger to sea having conducted missions in the Pacific Ocean back home.

“This is a very similar mission that we are used to doing back in Hawaii. We are very busy in Hawaii and maintain a very high operational tempo, 200 to 300 days out of the year we are on missions,” said Chief Warrant Officer 3 Daniel Cassidy, commander of the 605th Trans. Det.

Sgt. 1st Class Robert Caivano, detachment sergeant, 605th Trans. Det. said the transition onto the boat was an easy one for the crew.

“We came on to the boat and it was well maintained, everything was in order and their crew did a great job with the hand over,” said Caivano.

Caivano said the 605th was given training back at their home duty station on the exact mission they will perform. The 605th is able and ready to sustain the mission of delivering cargo throughout the region said Caivano.

“Our crew is a very close knit group and we have great team work,” said Caivano. “We plan to set a higher standard for the next group that follows us.”
