Thirteen teams came up with their best menus, decorations and presentations to compete for chef of the quarter here, March 11.

Only five teams made it to the final round, but all fell short of the winning crew led by Sgt. Tannisha Gamble, a food service specialist with Food Service Company, Combat Logistics Regiment 27, 2nd Marine Logistics Group.

The competition challenged the teams to create a meal centered around the theme “Autumn Begins.”

Judges were comprised from leadership throughout Camp Lejeune. 2nd MLG judges were Brig. Gen. Edward D. Banta, the commanding general of 2nd MLG, Sgt. Maj. George W. Young Jr., the sergeant major of 2nd MLG, Col. Terrence A. O’Connell, the commanding officer of Combat Logistics Regiment 25, 2nd MLG, and Sgt. Maj. Ricky W. Stroud, the sergeant major for CLR-25, 2nd MLG.

Each team’s score was based on cooking fundamentals, composition of dish, overall flavor, seasoning, doneness, timing of service and temperature.

Gamble, a Jacksonville, Fla., native, and her teammate, Pfc. Jordan Agosto, won the competition with their seasonally inspired pork dish. They prepared an autumn pork roast, autumn salad, sautéed zucchini, autumn harvest cookies and a warm, spicy punch. With teamwork and diligence, the two managed to prepare the food in only four hours.

“The competition was very difficult, and I knew [it] would be challenging,” said Gamble. In preparation for the opposition, Gamble said she reached out to her family for some guidance in the kitchen.

“It was hard trying to figure out what foods would come together with the autumn theme,” said Gamble. “To have a taste that would blend together, I came up with some recipes and my family helped me come up with some too. My family was happy about it and they told me they knew I would do great things.”

Gamble and Agosto both won a medal and a chef jacket with their respective names embroidered on it.
