Titans Jump Rope for Heart with youth of Richmond Hill
FORT STEWART, GA, UNITED STATES
FORT STEWART, Ga. - Soldiers of the 2-3 Brigade Special Troops Battalion “Titans,” 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, assisted faculty members and participated with the students of the Richmond Hill Elementary School in the “Jump Rope for Heart” event, held at the school Feb. 11.
Jump Rope for Heart is a fundraising event held nation wide, which is jointly sponsored by both the American Heart Association and the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance.
According to the AAHPERD’s website, “[This] program promotes physical education and provides children with knowledge of heart disease and stroke while raising funds for cardiovascular disease research, stroke research, and health education.”
The AAHPERD also states that the JRFH is not just a fundraiser or educational tool, but an event that unites parents, students and the community in an important cause.
That unification of the surrounding community can clearly be seen in the Titans integral role in the day’s event at the town’s elementary school, and how the Titan soldiers worked so well together with the school’s faculty and the children.
Part of this effortless integration may have to do with the fact that a large portion of the students at the school are actually from military families.
“I would estimate that about twenty percent [of our students] are from military families,” said Walt Barnes, the principal of the RHES.
Barnes went on to further to explain how the school’s relationship with the military was very symbiotic.
“The military partners up with us for many different events through out the year [the military] really does give to us. It works both ways though, we have always been very committed here in understanding and helping military families through their struggles, strains and complications due to the deployments of spouses and the frequent moving, “ said Barnes. “Its definitely a two-way street.”
However there was nothing else that needed to be said to explain just how valuable and cohesive the community bond between the school and the soldiers were. The tumultuous screams of delight and gleeful laughter of the children as they had fun with the soldiers said it all.
