NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Soldiers of the Tennessee Army National Guard’s 190th Engineer Company and the 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment assisted motorists in Jefferson and Greene counties last night as heavy snowfall blanketed East Tennessee.

Guard units from Cookeville to Kingsport were alerted yesterday and placed on standby to assist the Tennessee Highway Patrol if needed. Equipment including High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle's (HMMWV) were pre-staged at armories throughout the eastern part of the state, yet only two units were needed. The Tennessee National Guard Emergency Operations Center was activated and armories in the impacted region were placed on standby in the event emergency shelter was needed.

The National Guard has a two-fold mission. The federal mission is to provide the President and the Secretary of Defense with units capable of performing their wartime mission. The Tennessee Army Guard acted in their state mission during this storm, providing the Governor with a ready response force in accordance with the Tennessee Emergency Response Plan.
