BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan- The secretary of veteran affairs and U.S. Congressional representatives visited in-theater medical facilities Aug. 24.

During their visit, California Rep. Bob Filner, Arkansas Rep. John Boozman, and Secretary of Veteran Affairs R. James Nicholson followed the path of a recently injured Soldier and the medical treatment he received during his initial care at Forward Operating Base Orgun-E until his departure to Germany for continued treatment.

Doctors with the 541st Forward Surgical Team at FOB Orgun-E showed the congressmen and Nicholson their operating facility. The facility features life-saving equipment and techniques, which sustained the Soldier for movement to Craig Joint Theater Hospital.

"For me to be out here with these young surgeons and all the people that support them where this battlefield evacuation starts and the care starts is extremely valuable to me," Nicholson said.

The group boarded UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters and followed the same route used in the medical evacuation. Once they arrived, the group was shown the medical facility, which has extensive capabilities similar to the United States.

Nicholson said this was a great opportunity to observe the deployed medical operations. He said following one Soldier's experience was helpful in assessing the medical process and facilities in Afghanistan.

The group plans to continue their survey of the medical system with a trip to Germany.

"This is a terrific group of Americans working here," Nicholson said. "It has been a real privilege to visit."
