CAMP AS SAYILYAH, Qatar - Key leaders from Camp As Sayilyah’s medical community came together with Qatar medical representatives for a two day initiative to share experiences and discuss new studies and procedures, January 14th and 15th, here.

The Regional Integrated Medical Topics Conference was the third in an ongoing series of events designed to foster lasting partnerships between the host nation and the U.S. military.

“Cooperation with our partner nations is the number one initiative,” said Maj. Jan Rose, Chief of International Engagements with the 3D Medical Command Deployment Support. “And one of the ways to do that is through medical cooperation. It’s a common language.”

Finding common ground and mutual benefitt from partnership with the host nations in deployed settings has always been in important venture, Rose explained.

“It is a need; a group that share many commonalities through education and practice. Taking care of soldiers,” Rose continued. “We learn from them. We learn a lot of culture, and a lot of information, and hopefully they can take something away as well.”

She continued to explain that sharing knowledge on a broad spectrum of topics is important. However using anecdotal findings based on experiences in the field to better explain procedures is one of the most effective ways to foster trust.

“We’re talking about several medical topics, but we tried to tailor topics that were common to militaries. We’re going to talk about the Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome, Coronavirus, or MERS-CoV,” Rose said.

The conference didn’t stop at geographically significant topics, the scope discussion ranged from physical injuries to treatments for more common ailments.

“We’re also talking about common things; the new drugs on the market, the new protocols to treat hypertension, the latest in diabetic emergencies,” she continued. “Things like that, that are of interest to our physicians and we hope they’re of interest to theirs as well.”

“One of the American physicians that will speak is a renowned back surgeon from the Mayo clinic; one of the top back surgeons in the United States,” Rose said. “He’s a reservist who is currently activated; we flew him down from Kuwait to talk at the conference.”

One of the best parts about working with the host nation and military is that you have an abundance of experience from so many different backgrounds, Rose said.

Dr. (Col.) John Green III, command surgeon for Area Support Group-Qatar spoke of the renowned surgeon, “Dr. (Col.) Paul Huddleston is one of our premier Docs, he works at the Mayo Clinic, he is an orthopedic surgeon who will discuss chronic back pain and surgery for it, as well as on day two discussing understanding amputations in a war zone.”

“We’re coming together to share our knowledge as it relates to the military. There are different challenges in different parts of the world and different medical applications in a deployed zone,” Green continued. “They’re not considered in a deployed zone, we are. So we will bring to the table what a deployed zone may have, and that’s what they can learn from us. While we can learn from their experience living here.”

“At the end of the day I think it is a growing experience for everyone involved, a great opportunity to come and interact,” Rose said. “The Qatari Military Medical Services are unbelievably interactive. They want questions, answers, they challenge what you say in a positive way. It was a great success.”
