MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – Approximately 80 noncommissioned officers with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing participated in a colors ceremony aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., Jan. 21.
The ceremony was part of the Committed and Engaged Leadership initiative, introduced by 3rd MAW Commanding General Maj. Gen. Steven Busby.
“What makes it special is [that] it’s a completely NCO-led ceremony,” said Sgt. Jason M. May Sr., said Sgt. Jason M. May, Sr., reviewing officer and a Bergenfield, N.J., native with Marine Wing Communication Squadron (MWCS) 38.“All the Marines in the ceremony [and] in the platoons are all NCOs from multiple squadrons within the wing.”
Noncommissioned officers coordinated most of the details, from creating the letter of intent and writing the program to coordinating with the Provost Marshal’s Office to control traffic for the ceremony, explained May.
“These ceremonies, being NCO led and NCO driven, really give the NCOs the opportunity to showcase their skills and leadership traits,” said May.
As an integral part of the Committed and Engaged Leadership initiative, Busby entrusts corporals and sergeants with the power to take charge of a ceremony typically run by staff noncommissioned officers and officers.
“He’s all about the NCOs being the backbone of the Marine Corps,” said Sgt. Jennifer Gaskey, narrator for the ceremony and an Oceanside, Calif., native with MWCS-38. “[He has] sergeants take charge of the ceremony, which is awesome because we’re not micromanaged, [and] we’re not being told what to do. We’re given something, and we work at it and make it happen.”
In addition to highlighting the backbone of the Marine Corps, the ceremony focused on recognizing the efforts of charities supporting military outreach and expressing thankfulness for the local community’s support, explained Gaskey.
“The community is such a big part of what we do,” said May. “It’s an opportunity to invite them in and thank them for all they do.”
The ceremony honored PGA Tour member Bud Cauley, founder of the Bud Cauley Foundation and a supporter of Birdies for the Brave, both military outreach programs.
“He is using his new position, his higher level of influence as a PGA Tour player to help the men and women in the United States armed forces,” said May.
Both Cauley’s father and grandfather served as divers in the Navy.
“Growing up, I always had a great appreciation for all the sacrifices you guys and your families make for everyone in this country,” said Cauley. “Giving back to the military is something really special to me; it’s something really great my dad and [I] have been able to do these past few years.”
The Committed and Engaged Leadership initiative is slated to continue the monthly colors ceremonies to recognize excellent NCOs and give back to the local community.
