MARINE CORPS BASE QUANTICO, Va. - A numbing deluge filled Butler Stadium on a frigid evening as Marine Corps Air Facility and Marine Corps System Command took their positions on the field for what would be the last intramural football game of the year for one of the two teams.
Both teams needed a win to move on to the semifinals, but only one team could come out victorious, Nov, 26, 2013.
“Our intention when we started the team was to bring together players from different sections to build unit cohesion and camaraderie,” said Javier Ochoa, center, Marine Corps Air Facility, whose team won 32-6. “Overall, I think we have done a good job of holding true to our goals.”
After a sluggish start to the first half, MCSC scored the first touchdown, but missed their two-point conversion giving them a six-point lead.
However, MCAF turned the tables and ended the first half with a touchdown and a two-point conversion.
“I don’t think the weather played a part in this game tonight, but we definitely handled it a lot better than the other team,” said Chase Tillman, coach, Marine Corps Air Facility. “The other team still did pretty well regardless. They didn’t give up and they fought until the very end.”
The second half was completely one-sided; MCAF’s defense made six interceptions and completely locked down MCSC’s quarterback.
“The biggest thing that turned over the game was our defense,” said Ochoa.
MCAF scored three more touchdowns with a two-point conversion during the second half. According to Ochoa, Travis Hull was the reason they won the game. With his receiving skills he scored two touchdowns and had three interceptions during the second half.
“I don’t think there was anything that we could have done better,” said Ochoa. “We locked down the quarterback, blocked the long passes and played a great running offense.”
