    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - A storm rose on a cold, dark morning.

The barbaric roars from approximately 4,000 Marines and sailors thundered through the streets here as they made their presence known.

Service members with 2nd Marine Logistics Group celebrated the Marine Corps’ 238th birthday by conquering Julian C. Smith Road during an approximately three-mile run Nov. 5.

“I was talking to my counterpart, [Brig. Gen. James W. Lukeman, the commanding general of 2nd Marine Division,] and I told him we would have about 4,000 Marines and sailors out on our run and we are going to wake him up at his division headquarters,” said Brig. Gen. Edward D. Banta, the commanding general of 2nd MLG. “… and I think we did it.”

The group formed up at Soiffert Field, then ran to the 2nd MLG headquarters and back.

“These are times you will remember for the rest of your life,” said Sgt. Maj. George W. Young Jr., a Danville, Va., native, and the sergeant major of 2nd MLG. “When you get older and look back in your career, you wish you can do it again. If I had another life to give I would reenlist in the Marine Corps and do it all again. Ooh rah!”

After completing the run, the commanding general and sergeant major of 2nd MLG reminded the Marines and sailors about the culture of the Marine Corps and what the Marine Corps birthday is all about.

“Being a Marine is special,” said Banta. “We have been doing this for a while and we get to get together and have a chance to look back on our heritage and the legacy that has been passed down to us from those who have gone before and worn this uniform.”

Marines and sailors stood on the field gaping, and absorbed the command staff’s words as they addressed the 13th commandant’s Marine Corps’ birthday message.

“The commandant says ‘let us be worthy successors’,” said Young. “We do that professionally, personally, day-in and day-out. Whatever you do in the organization, be the best you can be. Make them times you will look back and tell yourself, ‘yes, I gave it my all because I was a worthy successor.’”
