NEWPORT, R.I. – The Center for Service Support (CSS) announced today that it will officially begin its Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) donation season Nov. 6.
Created in the 1960s by President John F. Kennedy, the program was designed to give federal employees a chance to donate to a variety of charities once per year without constant solicitation by individual organizations. The CFC is the only government-authorized charity organization that provides service members an opportunity to donate to a charity of their choosing. Sailors may choose to either donate to specific charity organizations or to CFC as a whole.
"I think it's very important to provide Sailors the opportunity and necessary information about the charities they want to make a donation to," said Chief Logistics Specialist (SW/AW) Garrett Gardiner, command CFC coordinator from Albany, La. “It’s easier to give when you know the bulk of your donation is going to the cause you are passionate about. That is an important aspect of the program.”
Gardiner said the Sailors and civilian employees involved in CFC outreach efforts will employ several promotional activities to raise awareness and garner more donations this year.
“In addition to weekly fundraising activities, we will work with our social media program administrators and the base newspaper to get the word out,” said Gardiner. “It’s important that everyone who wants to donate is able to. There are a lot of deserving charities that provide assistance and services for myriad people and causes. We want to help them.”
The goal for CSS contribution to the annual campaign, which runs from Sept. 1 to Dec. 15, is $5,000. There will be a display on the quarterdeck representing the campaign’s progress in reaching its goal according to Gardiner.
“People who want to donate to the CFC need look no further than within their own commands,” said Gardiner. "Each person who wants to donate has a unit coordinator or key person that reports to the command coordinator. Command coordinators will have brochures and contribution slips. Our coordinators will be able to answer any questions about the program."
Sailors or civilians can contribute by filling out a pledge card designating the donation to be made over a 12-month paycheck allotment or with a one-time donation by cash or check. If they choose to do an allotment, that amount is deducted during a 12-month period.
According to Command Master Chief (SCW/SW/AW) Ray Rosado from New Britain, Conn., donating through the CFC campaign is yet another way CSS can give back to the community and the world.
"We see our Sailors giving back to their communities every day,” said Rosado. “A lot of people donate their time and money to charities that are important or interest them. CFC is the one program that gives Sailors the latitude of donation amount, frequency of contribution and what organization receives their donation. CFC gives our people total control in the philanthropic process."
CSS and its learning sites provide sailors with the knowledge and skills needed to support the fleet's warfighting mission. More than 300 staff and faculty work hand-in-hand with the fleet and are dedicated to ensure training is current and well executed on behalf of 10,000 Sailors who graduate from CSS courses annually in the administration, logistics and media communities.
