Afghan commandos find car bomb, repel insurgent in attack in Sayadabad

WARDAK PROVINCE, Afghanistan- Afghan Commandos from the 6th Special Operations Kandak thwarted an insurgent attack and prevented the emplacement of a car bomb Sept. 19 in Kabul province’s Sayadabad district.

Approximately six insurgents attacked the Commandos near Highway 1 in Baghak village. The Commandos were there as part of an effort by Afghan National Security Forces to increase security and presence in the area.

The elite soldiers spotted the armed insurgents trying to conceal weapons and the car bomb. The insurgents opened fire without hesitation, but the Commandos overwhelmed their attackers and caused their retreat.

Afghan Commandos secured the area and detonated the car bomb in place. No Afghan military, civilian or enemy casualties were reported.

Baghak village is a known stronghold for insurgents and foreign fighters. Insurgents take advantage of the area to facilitate weapons storage and to increase manpower, said Noori Mohammed, Wardak province National Security Directorate Chief.

“My message to all insurgents is that war does not resolve problems,” said Mohammed. “War just destroys our country and causes damages. When insurgents put improvised explosive devices on roads, bridges and in villages, they destroy our homeland.”

Afghan National Special Force Commandos with 6th Special Operations Kandak conducted successful clearing operations in the area in May, June and July. Their overall goal is to put an end to insurgent support zones in the province and enable successful Afghan Local Police expansion in the area by eradicating insurgent activity in Sayadabad, Mohammed added.

The village has been openly attacked to intimidate Afghan Security Forces and innocent civilians, said Nizrab Shah, District Police Chief.

“Afghan National Army Special Forces are a small unit but they work well especially when working with the ALP,” said Shah. “They play a big part in providing security to the area.”
