Spartans fall prey to Falcons

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. – The Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Falcons played the Camp Pendleton Headquarters and Support Battalion Spartans in a football game aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, Calif., Sept. 10.

The Falcons defense left nothing to be desired as they completely shut down the Spartans offense every play resulting in a sweeping Falcon victory of 23-0.

This three game winning streak isn’t enough to get these Marines over confident; they are always seeking improvement.

“Our defense was firing on all cylinders tonight,” stated Master GySgt. Carlice Moffett, the Falcon’s head coach, with pride. “They played phenomenally tonight. We still have a lot to work on offensively and defensively, and the team knows that, but I appreciate their hard work. I also appreciate the units who allow the players to come to practice, to these games and allow them to do something they love.”

What would normally be a seesaw of offense and defense over the gridiron, turned into a one-sided defensive onslaught.
When the defense wasn’t diving on fumbles, or leaping into the air to intercept the ball; the offense, led by the team’s quarterback, Sgt. Casey Rogers, connected with Sgt. Jeremy Rodriguez, a wide receiver with the Falcons, for three touchdowns.

“The game went pretty well,” said Rodriguez. “We executed the way we should have, the quarterback was throwing on point and the line was blocking really well.”

After each touchdown, Lance Cpl. James Kraemer, a kicker with the Falcons, sent the ball careening over the goal post bringing the score to 21-0 by the middle of the third quarter.

Then, in an unsurprising play from the defense, the Falcons drove the Spartans back into their own end zone for a safety to add two more points to the scoreboard at the end of the third.

“Some mistakes were made, and we definitely have room to improve, but I feel like we did pretty well,” said Rodriguez. “We won’t be satisfied until we win that last game.”

After the final horn both teams lined up on the 50 yard-line to shake hands on a game well played.
