ISAF, GIRoA dignitaries meet to strengthen partnerships

KABUL, Afghanistan – A Joint Coordination Body (JCB) meeting between International Security Assistance Force officials and Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan dignitaries was held at ISAF headquarters in Kabul, September 3, 2013.

The meeting was co-chaired by German army Maj. Gen. Reinhard Wolski and Mr. Gul Maqsood Sabit, the Deputy Finance Minister for Revenue and Customs, and organized by the ISAF Military Technical Agreements Branch.

British army Lt. Gen. John G. Lorimer, the ISAF deputy commander, told the group ISAF is committed to a strong and enduring partnership with GIRoA and the people of Afghanistan.

All of the GIRoA ministries including the High Office Oversight and anti-Corruption and the Afghan Supreme Court representatives were present to initiate the JCB process. One of the missions is to have them form working groups to address jurisdictional and taxation issues.

“The JCB process will provide a framework to strengthen this partnership and for us to work together to resolve important issues related to the MTA,” said Lorimer.

The MTA remains the legal foundation for the ISAF mission and for the support ISAF provides to Afghanistan and its national security forces. The meeting marked the 11th time the representatives have met; the last JCB session was in November 2011. Another highlight for the assembly is to provide customs working groups to reinforce the customs process.

“Our contractors are an integral part of ISAF and they play a critical role in providing support to ISAF and the ANSF,” said Lorimer.

Following the comments by Lorimer, Sabit spoke to the group of representatives.

“Within the foundation of our work together, issues might come up as a result of a lack of communication,” said Sabit. “Meetings like this will help, we will work together to find solutions.”

Sabit thanked the group for attending and told them to continue to work together to address important issues. He said he would like to see the same people at the next meeting scheduled in the upcoming weeks.

Following the meeting the Afghan dignitaries and ISAF representatives gathered for a group picture on the doorstep of ISAF headquarters.
