Afghan Local Police destroy roadside bomb in Kandahar

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Afghan Local Police removed a roadside bomb near a heavily-traveled road Sept. 8 just outside of Panwai district’s Khogiani village.

ALP transferred the bomb to a nearby Afghan National Army special forces unit where expert bomb technicians rendered the explosives safe and destroyed it, ALP officials reported.

The bomb was made of a hollow 155 mm artillery round filled with ammonium nitrate aluminum, which is illegal in Afghanistan. It was also designed to explode in a particular direction – a technique regularly used by the Taliban to target unsuspecting civilians and police traveling by foot.

ALP and Afghan National Army special forces believe foreign fighters aided in making the bomb, because the explosive material is prohibited in Afghanistan.

There were no civilian casualties or damage to infrastructure reported in the operation.
