FORT KNOX, Ky. - Soldiers of Company C, Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, partnered with family members, Department of defense civilians, and the Hardin County Habitat for Humanity to support a local family in a unique way Aug. 13.

Volunteers helped clean out a house’s crawl space, framed the home and installed insulation.

“One of our Army values is selfless service so we want to continue to not only have selfless service to our country but to the communities that we represent, so we can be closer to them,” Capt. Dan Murdough, Company C commander, said.

Habitat for Humanity was established in 1976 as a program designed to build homes at no profit and no interest for families in need.

After leaders made the decision to volunteer time and support the community, it was left up to the Soldiers to turn the plan into reality.

Murdough said it took no time for soldiers to eagerly raise their hands.

With three combat deployments - two in Iraq and another in Afghanistan - Spc. Richard Cumings said it was good to get out of the office and do something a little different.

“It’s nice to come out here and throw on some raggedy clothes and build a home for a family in the community”, Cumings said.

Through the work of Habitat and volunteers like those from the STB, thousands of low-income families found new hope in the form of affordable housing.

Habitat has helped build and repair more than 600,000 houses and served more than 3 million people around the world.

Tina and Tommy Clark of Elizabethtown, Ky., and their seven children, are scheduled to receive their new home sometime in the next five months.

“This is time they could be doing other things, but they’re out here doing this to help us,” Tina said.

After four long hours of hard manual labor Aug. 13, soldiers and volunteers took a minute to step back and look at their accomplishments.

Leaders and soldiers of the STB are planning to team up with Habitat for Humanity again in November for a four-week project.

“It’s a great opportunity to give it back and show them that this is a two-fold operation,” Murdough added.
