Maruf, Mya Neshin ALPs find IEDs, repel Taliban
KANDAHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan Local Police (ALP) in Maruf and Mya Neshin districts proved invaluable as they stopped Taliban criminals from planting roadside bombs recently in Afghanistan’s Kandahar province, ALP officials said.
ALP Guardians in Maruf reported they observed at least two Taliban criminals emplacing a possible bomb Aug. 11 near Dag Village.
The Taliban engaged the ALP with rifle and machine gun fire. The ALP repelled the attackers and forced them to retreat into nearby Sakzi village, a known Taliban stronghold. No ALPs were injured during gun battle.
The ALP moved in to Sakzi village the following day to investigate the Taliban firing position. The village guardians discovered three jugs each filled with 5 kilograms of homemade explosives.
On Aug. 12 in Mya Neshin district, ALP near Lahksang village discovered a victim operated bomb – a system designed to detonate when the victim triggers a pressure plate or switch.
ALP formed a perimeter around the site and requested assistance from the 8th Special Operations Kandak. Afghan National Army Special Forces from this unit detonated the bomb in place. The ALP retrieved the trigger mechanism for inspection.
The execution of Mya Neshin district’s layered security plan, with no assistance from Coalition Forces, demonstrates the district’s capability to autonomously respond to threats.
Neither incident resulted in unnecessary property damage or loss life.
