Two insurgents killed by ALP, failed bombing attempt
PANJWAI DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Two insurgents were killed in a failed attempt to emplace a roadside bomb Aug. 9, in Kandahar province’s Panjwai district, Afghan Local Police officials reported.
Residents in the district’s Charkab village informed Afghan Local Police (ALP) of possible Taliban criminals operating in the area. The local police arrived on scene and found one insurgent dead from premature detonation of the device. The second assailant opened fire on the ALP patrol from a distance soon after their arrival. The ensuing gun battle resulted in the attacker’s death, officials said.
Further investigation of the blast site confirmed that the explosive device included an anti-tampering system, according to the officials. The system is designed to detonate the device during removal or rendering attempts.
The village guardians transported the dead insurgents to the Panjwai District Center to confirm their identities and group affiliation.
ALP officials praised Charkab villagers for the notification. The early warning allowed ALP to surprise the remaining insurgent and ensure the village’s safety.
The incident resulted in no collateral damage to the village. No death or injury of ALP and villagers was reported.
This was the second such device found in the area in recent weeks. The previous device resulted in the death of an Afghan Uniformed Police member. ALP officials believe the devices were emplaced to target their patrols, because of recent security gains against Taliban operating in the area.
