GREENSBORO, N.C. - Marine Corps Recruiting Sub-Station Greensboro conducted a pool function aboard the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park in Greensboro, N.C., August 10, 2013.

The Marines and poolees went on a three-mile hike through the park. They stopped at different memorials where the Marines taught the Poolees about historic Marine Corps battles and witnessed the relief-in-place for the new staff noncommissioned officer in charge of RSS Greensboro.

“I thought today was very exciting. I’m glad I got to spend the day with my teammates,” said Jeffrey Swaim, a 17-year-old poolee and graduate of Ragsdale High School.

Their first stop was at a monument to commemorate all Greensboro natives who have served in the military past and present. The ground was lined with bricks inscribed with names, services and service dates. Here, the poolees learned about the battle of Belleau Wood and Iwo Jima, two of the most important battles in Marine Corps history.

“It was fantastic that we’re learning as a group,” said Swaim. “I feel like I learned a lot today.”

The next stop was the Nathanael Greene Monument, where the poolees learned about the Chosin Reservoir and Maj. Gen. Greene, who was a Revolutionary War General and the namesake for the town of Greensboro. Here, two poolees received their certificates for joining the delayed entry program.

“It was motivating to receive my DEP certificate in front of my peers,” said Flake Redmond, a 18-year-old graduate of Northeast Guilford High School.

It was at the Nathanael Greene Monument that the poolees witnessed the relief-in-place for the old and new staff noncommissioned officer in charge of RSS Greensboro. Gunnery Sgt. Carey Hamil passed the sub-station’s guidon onto Gunnery Sgt. Fordys Arnold. The exchange of the guidon signifies the exchange of leadership.

“It was very motivating and it’s an honor to have the pool,” said Arnold. “I expect the continued growth and development, physically and mentally, of the pool.”

It is now Arnold’s job to ensure his 39 poolees are as prepared for boot camp as possible.

“It’s easy knowing that you’re turning the pool over to someone who will continue to mold it and grow it,” said Hamil. “I have no worries. It’s a strong pool. I’m looking forward to seeing where Greensboro will go from here.”

Most of the poolees have been in the DEP for a while and have grown to know Hamil.

“I want to thank him very much for my entrance to the Corps,” said Swaim. “It’s going to be a big part of my life and without him it wouldn’t be possible.”

While the poolees owe a lot to Hamil, Flake said he’s looking forward to seeing a different style of leadership because seeing different styles will help him develop his own.
