MARINE CORPS AIR STATION BEAUFORT, S.C. - Military children and their parents gathered at the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort Library for a day in Japan learning experience which was sponsored by Marine Corps Community Services, July 27.

During the event, children were able to partake in an arts and crafts activity where they colored their own Japanese fan and ate sushi made out of candy.

Prior to arts and crafts, the children were read youth-friendly stories about the Japanese culture.

"This event is part of our reading around the world summer reading program," said RoseMarie Krauss, a librarian at the Air Station Library. "This event was to give the children an intro to the Japanese culture and how they live."

According to Krauss, the library aims to not only teach children about different cultures in events like this, but also teach them how the cultures are different from ours.

"We teach that every culture has a way of doing things," said Krauss. "For example, we try to teach them how differently the culture eats and how they dress."

While the children were having their fun with arts and crafts, the parents were close by watching their children as they made their fans.

"The main reason I brought my child here is because she was born in Japan," said Cyle Burr, spouse of Sgt. Adam Burr. "I thought it would remind her of where she was born."

There was one mother, who just moved back to the states from Japan who thought it would be great to bring her children to the event.

"My children seemed to enjoy the arts and crafts and getting to interact with other children," said Tanya Nelson, spouse of Navy Lt. David Nelson.

According to Nelson, an event like this would be a great way for anybody considering living or being stationed in Japan to get a good introduction to the culture.

"I think this would definitely inspire others to possibly do some more research on the Japanese culture," said Nelson.
