MYA NESHIN DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Thirteen Afghan Local Police (ALP) and Afghan Uniform Police (AUP) graduated from a two-week Explosive Hazardous Reduction Course in Mya Neshin district, Kandahar province, Afghanistan, July 29.
During the course, the Afghan forces learned counter-improvised explosive device techniques vital to protecting villagers from Taliban-emplaced homemade bombs - the number one killer of Afghan civilians according to a recent U.N. report.
Recruits learned IED detection, confirmation and reduction, evidence collection, simple interrogation tactics, and procedures for searching personnel, vehicles, caches and compounds.
An ANSF trained in counter-IED procedures is more critical now since Afghan forces formally assumed responsibility for security from Coalition forces set to leave the country next year.
"The enemies of Afghanistan try to target the ANSF (Afghan National Security Forces) by emplacing IEDs on the public routes," said Javid Faisal, a spokesman for the Kandahar governor's office. “However, many recent IED strikes have only killed innocent civilians.”
Graduates stressed the need for locals and ANSF to work together to solve the IED crisis and prevent more senseless death and destruction.
“We really need the cooperation of the Afghan people,” said one AUP. “As soon as they see something suspicious, we would really appreciate it if they would report that to the local authority, police or ANA- whatever they find convenient.”
With the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s recent announcement of Tranche 5, Afghan National Security Forces are committed to taking the lead in Afghanistan’s security.
