KHAKREZ DISTRICT, Afghanistan – Insurgents fired several 82mm mortars towards Khakrez District Center, close to the country’s third holiest site, Shah Agha Shrine, in Darvishan village, Khakrez district, Kandahar province, July 25.

The shrine is important to Afghans and Muslims around the world because it is the tomb of Sufi Shah Agha, a companion, cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad.

“The fact that insurgents attacked near a holy site like this during Ramadan demonstrates their lack of regard for both the people of Afghanistan and the Islam religion,” said Javid Faisal, a spokesman for the Kandahar governor's office.

Former Khakrez District Governor Qaydum Khan once called the shrine “an expression of the Afghan government's commitment to Khakrez.”

Afghan National Security Forces immediately responded to the insurgent attack by returning fire and patrolling the surrounding area, forcing the enemy to quickly retreat into neighboring mountains.

“Shah Agha Shrine is considered to be one of the most popular tourist sites in Kandahar,” said Mr. Faisal. “Attacking this holy site means attacking tourism, the economy and spirituality of the country. We condemn all the cowardly attacks of the Taliban that kill people, cause financial damage, and harm the rich culture of Afghanistan.”

Afghan citizens sell a variety of handmade and imported goods at the district bazaar, located close to the shrine. The shrine accounts for a large portion of the bazaar’s commerce because of its status as a spiritual and tourist destination, especially during the Afghan holidays of Nowruz and Eid Ul Fitr.

Afghan National Security Forces will continue to provide security for the Afghan population during Ramadan, ensuring a safe and secure environment for all Afghans throughout the country.
