CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan--Recognizing a need for more accessible Soldier health care, the 87th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 3rd Sustainment Brigade, opened their first internal Role I medical clinic at Camp Leatherneck, Afghanistan, July 22.

After joint collaboration and three months of planning and construction, the medical clinic will provide convenient, personalized health care to more than 700 supported soldiers.

Before the centralized clinic opened, soldiers stood in line with Marines, sailors, and coalition forces in order to receive medical care at Leatherneck—a process that took many troops out of the fight for hours at a time.

“Soldiers had to go out of their way to be seen,” said Cpl. Daniel Posey, a 3rd Sustainment Brigade medic who will work full-time in the new clinic. “A 15-minute visit would turn into an hour visit.”

The new facility is located in the vicinity of the Soldiers’ work areas.

“The clinic allows me to ensure that all the soldiers we support are okay,” continued Posey, a Coahoma, Texas, native. “I will be able to walk around and interact with people since our clinic will be in a central location. Soldiers will have constant care.”

Opening the clinic was a joint force effort, drawing on resources from nearly every corner of the forward operating base. The medical clinic, originally an empty wood building without a ceiling, had to be reconfigured and improved by Navy Seabees with Company E, Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 15 of Belton, Mo.

“I appreciate all of the hard work the Seabees, Medical Logistics and my medics to make the opening happen,” said 1st Lt. Matthew Corey, 87th CSSB physician’s assistant and Kenosha, WI., native.

Once construction was complete, the Air Force and Army medics worked hand in hand to acquire the necessary equipment to get the medical station up and running.

“I look forward to providing quality care to the soldiers of the 87th CSSB,” Corey added.

Corey, Posey and five Air Force medics will run the independent medical clinic, providing primary care for the 87th CSSB soldiers, to include minor procedures.

Lt. Col. Lance Curtis, 87th CSSB commander and Warrensburg, Mo., native, recognizes the importance the clinic will have on his Soldiers.

“At the end of the day, the soldier wins, and that is what it is all about,” he said.
