JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas —The 205th Press Camp Headquarters and the 4th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) celebrated the U.S. Army’s birthday with a group lunch here, June 14.
Having just moved from the Stilwell Reserve Center just outside the (base) gates, celebrating the Army’s 238th birthday was the first function at the new Army Reserve Center on Petroleum Drive for Fort Sam Houston’s newest tenant organizations.
Col. Rufus Woods III, the 4th ESC chief of staff and oldest member attending from the 4th ESC, and Pfc. Ian A. Valley, public affairs specialist and youngest attending soldier from the 205th PCH, ceremoniously sliced an Army birthday cake with a saber.
“The Army is steeped in tradition and the Army’s birthday is another one of those traditions we celebrate,” said Lt. Col. Lindan A. Moya, commander of the205th PCH.
Getting soldiers together to celebrate such an important event as the Army’s 238th birthday is awesome noted Woods. “This is a great setting because it does build camaraderie when we can sit back, talk and continue to do the mission as well,” he said
Though the Army birthday is recognized on few calendars, the Army is a full year older than the United States of America and is, therefore, the only military service allowed to fly their flag as high as Old Glory.
