WILMINGTON, Del.- Hundreds of historic books, antique paintings and other military relics - which encompass the Delaware National Guard's 350-year history - fill the shelves and walls of the library/conference room at the organization's Joint Force Headquarters. The library's historic heirlooms - along with a plethora of proud soldiers and airmen - were eyewitness to another page in history; these guardsmen gathered April 8 to witness the promotion of Capt. Joseph E. Yawn to the field grade rank of major.

"What a pleasure is it for me to promote Major Joe Yawn," exclaimed Maj. Gen. Francis D. Vavala, before the crowd of onlookers. Maj. Gen. Vavala, the adjutant general of the Delaware National Guard, spoke accolades, referencing several accomplishments spanning Yawn's 18 years of service.

"He's mobilized three times, once during the first Gulf War with the 82nd Airborne Division and most recently he did a marvelous job commanding our 153rd MP Company in Iraq," Maj. Gen. Vavala said. Maj. Yawn also mobilized on the home front in support of Operations Noble Eagle and Jump Start.

"In all of those mobilizations he has done a great job, earning the Bronze Star Medal on his recent deployment," added Vavala.

The promotion ceremony was completed with the 'pining' of the gold-brown oak leaf on Yawn's Army Combat Uniform. Two senior noncommissioned officers from the 153rd MP Company – 1st Sgt. Mike Fields and Master Sgt. Chris Callahan - shared in the honor of placing the field grade insignia on Yawn's chest.

Maj. Yawn said that he could not of "done it" without the efforts and guidance of NCOs like Fields and Callahan.

Yawn currently serves as the executive officer of the 2nd Battalion, 72nd Troop Command. Effective June 2009, he will be transferred to the 193rd Regiment Regional Training Institute, located at Bethany Beach, Del. He is one of the few DNG members who will have served in the 72nd Troop Command, the 261st Signal Brigade, and now the 193rd Regiment RTI.
