Story by Staff Sgt. Alexander Burnett

    21st Theater Sustainment Command

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany - Command Sgt. Maj. Brian K. Mainor assumed responsibility of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s Special Troops Battalion from Command Sgt. Maj. Mariano Z. Alvarez during a change of responsibility ceremony on Rhine Ordnance Barracks, June 25.

The change of responsibility was conducted in a traditional manner, with the passing of the noncommissioned officer’s saber. Alvarez passed the saber to Lt. Col. Patricia K. Wright, the STB commander and a native of Sheffield, Mass., symbolizing his relinquishment of responsibility. Wright then passed the saber to Mainor, symbolizing her trust in him to take care of the battalion’s soldiers. According to tradition, the command sergeant major may change, but the saber remains razor sharp.

Mainor, a native of Staten Island, N.Y., comes to the "Always Ready" battalion from Fort Bragg, N.C. During the ceremony he expressed his excitement at the opportunity to lead the STB.

“I am fired up and ready to go to work,” Mainor said. “I thought that when I was a drill sergeant that was the best job ever. When I was a first sergeant I thought that was the best job ever. As command sergeant major, I am sure this will be the best job ever.”

He also discussed some of the ideals he intends to lead with during his time as command sergeant major.

“I believe strongly in the value of standards and discipline,” he said. “All of the Army values that we see on the wall everyday are important and I want my leaders to instill those in their soldiers.”

Alvarez, a native of Brownsville, Texas, and his family continue on to Fort Stewart, Ga., where he will become the command sergeant major of the 3rd Infantry Division’s Special Troops Battalion. He has been a member of the "First in Support" command for five years, first as the logistics section sergeant major. He served as the STB command sergeant major for the last two years.

“I want to thank all the soldiers from the Special Troops Battalion for giving me this great opportunity to be their command sergeant major,” Alvarez said. “My whole life has revolved around taking care of soldiers and being here has been an honor for me and my family.”
