BISMARCK, N.D. - The North Dakota Army National Guard's state aviation officer, Jerry M. Anderson, was promoted to colonel during a ceremony today at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Bismarck.

As the state aviation officer, he is responsible for all North Dakota Army National Guard aviation operations, maintenance, logistics and safety.

Brig. Gen. David B. Anderson (no relation), commander of the North Dakota Army Command, presided over the promotion ceremony. Jerry Anderson's wife, Kristie, and his children assisted in the ceremony.

"This is a long overdue promotion for Jerry Anderson," said Brig. Gen. David Anderson. "He has effectively led our Guard's aviation efforts as the state aviation officer since 2010. He's been a key asset to a critical component in the North Dakota National Guard. Aviation is imperative to our Guard's mission success, especially in light of recent years' events as aviation has deployed to Afghanistan, Kosovo, Bosnia and Iraq as well as supported several domestic operations."

Anderson initially joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1991 and served as a Marine for more than 13 years.

In 2004, he transferred to the N.D. Army National Guard. He served in Kosovo from 2009-2010 as the deputy operations officer for the North Dakota Army National Guard's Kosovo Forces 12.

Additionally, he commanded the 1st Battalion, 112th Security and Support Battalion from September 2010 to January 2013. He graduated from University of North Dakota with a major in criminal justice.

His major awards include Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal, Kosovo Campaign Medal and NATO Medal. He is rated as a senior aviator with more than 20 years of aviation experience and is qualified to fly all aircraft within the North Dakota Army Guard.

Originally from Williston, he and his family reside in Bismarck.
