KHAKREZ DISTRICT, Afghanistan – District leaders, teachers, school children, and more than 75 village elders from Arowgh and surrounding areas, gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open a new school in Zaylabad village, Khakrez district, Kandahar province, May 20.

The ceremony marked the completed renovation and handover of the new facility to newly-appointed District Education Representative (DER) Mahmood Nasim.

The school provides the district with a larger building to significantly expand education opportunities and teach more students in Khakrez. It also provides an opportunity to convert the old Zaylabad School into what will be only the second girls’ school in the district, which is greatly needed in an area that serves over 300 children.

Other district leaders including District Governor Mohammad Yousef, Khakrez District Chief of Police Haji Zulmay, Afghan National Army Commander Capt. Mohammadullah, and District Development Assembly (DDA) Chairman Nazir Mohammad also attended the ceremony.

The ceremony allowed local Government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan (GIRoA) officials and villagers to interact, discuss concerns, and work together to find solutions to current problems. Opening a new school demonstrates GIRoA’s ability to provide essential education services to Khakrez district.

“Education is very important to the future of our country,” said district governor Yousef. “We must put down the gun and instead use the pen.”

After the school’s opening, District Governor Yousef, District Chief of Police Zulmay and several elders distributed humanitarian assistance to students and local citizens including: school supplies, prayer rugs, children’s clothing, hand-held radios, and cooking supplies.

“You elders must send the children of your villages to school,” said Police Chief Zulmay. “Education will allow the children of Khakrez to become anything they dream when they grow up; they could even be the President of Afghanistan someday if they stay in school.”
