CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Many contemplate but only a small, select percentage of Americans actually join the U.S. Marine Corps. Fewer still can successfully claim 20 years of military service.
Staff Sgt. Taran Walker, a Lexington, S.C., native and former motor transportation chief with Combat Logistics Battalion 6, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, recently met this challenge and retired from the Marines during a ceremony here, April 26.
"It's a seminal point in the life of Staff Sgt. Walker, and it's no small feat," said Lt. Col. Brian Mullery, the commanding officer of CLB-6. "Twenty years ago, I was a senior drill instructor teaching recruits like him, and it does my heart good 20 years later to see how well they've progressed. He's enriched our lives as Marines and sailors and unselfishly taken the assignments given to him - be it recruiting duty or multiple tours overseas, which took him away from his family."
Since Walker's enlistment on July 27, 1993, his overseas tours of duty include an initial deployment to Japan, two deployments to Al Anbar province, Iraq, and his most recent deployment to Helmand province, Afghanistan. His dedication earned him the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals.
Walker credits the support of his family for helping him through his many years of service.
"Without my beautiful wife being there for me and the kids through all the deployments and the ups and downs throughout my career, I would not have made it to this point," said Walker appreciatively.
Walker said he plans to devote more time to his wife, Milu, and four children now that he's retired.
