CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait - Cpl. Markeisha Williamson, a native of Phenix City, Ala., earned the title of Noncommissioned Officer of the Year for Task Force Vulcan in Kuwait April 5, 2013.
Williamson is a human resource specialist for the 502nd Human Resource Company, an active duty unit from Fort Hood, Texas. She is a graduate of Shaw High School in Columbus, Ga.
The competition for noncommissioned officer of the year involved physical and mental challenges. Each soldier had to take a physical fitness test, fire for rifle qualification, take a written test on Army history and regulations and demonstrate hands-on knowledge of first-aid and basic warrior tasks.
“The most challenging part was the sergeants major board,” said Williamson.
The board was made up of five Army sergeants major who could ask the soldier any question and then rate them on knowledge, appearance and military bearing.
Brig. Gen. Donald Tatum, commander of the 135th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, awarded her the Army Commendation Medal for her efforts.
Williamson said, "I joined the Army for the education benefits but Army life just fits me."
In a few weeks, Williamson will compete with other outstanding noncommissioned officers from an even higher level command, the 1st Theater Sustainment Command. If she wins there, she will compete to be Noncommissioned Officer of the Year for all soldiers in Army Central Command.
Williamson and her unit serve under the command of the 135th ESC, an Alabama Army National Guard unit from Birmingham, Ala. These units are known as Task Force Vulcan, in honor of the 135th’s Birmingham roots. The 135th is deployed to Kuwait in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The unit coordinates and plans the movement of troops and supplies throughout the Middle East.
