NAVAL AIR FACILITY ATSUGI, Japan – Sailor of the Week is a title granted to a different sailor on board Naval Air Facility Atsugi who has shown exemplary skill and work ethic within their shop and rate.
On April 1, the weekly honor was given to Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Nathan Caldwell of the Branch Health Clinic Atsugi. Son of Paula and Millard Caldwell Jr., of Harlan, Ky., the almost four-year Navy veteran graduated from Bearden High School in Knoxville, Tenn.
Caldwell was honored as the guest host of the base’s weekly show “Captain’s Call” with NAF Atsugi commanding officer Capt. Steven Wieman and Command Master Chief Carlton Duncan.
Caldwell’s grandfather was a chief boatswain’s mate, and his decision to join the Navy was to carry on a family tradition.
“I have always thought very highly of people serving the country. I feel that I am able to something for my shipmates,” he said. “I was not sure I would ever be able to do that, so I am excited to help out and serve.”
Caldwell is a pharmacy technician, which required him to complete specialized training in “C” School located in Portsmouth, Va.
“I’ve learned a lot in the medical field, which is what I was hoping for,” he said. “I looked forward to becoming a hospital corpsman when I joined, and I was lucky enough to get involved with pharmacy school.”
Caldwell is responsible for contributing to filling and dispensing thousands of prescriptions per month, ordering the immunization and pharmaceutical stock every quarter and working after-duty hours as an emergency vehicle operator.
“We provide medication to assist the healing process and we ensure the integrity of the correct dosage for the patient’s age,” he explains. “We try our best to provide it to the patient in a timely manner and take pride in staying on top of our stock.”
Caldwell’s dedication to his job and command has not gone unnoticed, and was a primary reason he was nominated as Sailor of Week, according his chain of command.
“[Caldwell is a] hard worker, a good sailor and he has an amazing work ethic,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman Justin Mannick, Caldwell’s leading chief petty officer. “He is good with the junior sailors. He started a big advancement program here at the clinic, which hopefully will help advance more people than we normally do.”
Caldwell’s dedication to his own personal goals and assisting junior sailors shines through, especially three to four months away from the advancement exams.
Mannick said Caldwell takes time to set up weekly study sessions and makes them fun and interactive with an occasional jeopardy-styled quiz session.
Caldwell attributes all his accomplishments back to his command’s hard work and leadership that has motivated him.
“I am just surprised that I was chosen,” remarked Caldwell. “I am grateful for the opportunity and I feel lucky to be in Branch Health Clinic Atsugi around so many hardworking shipmates. Right now I feel the best is yet to come here in Atsugi.”
