FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Staff Sgt. Tyrone Mitchell was awarded The Soldier's Medal on February 13, 2013, for rescuing a trapped driver in an overturned car.
Staff Sgt. Tyrone A. Mitchell, 8th Military Information Support Battalion (Airborne), was awarded the Soldier’s Medal by LT. Gen Charles T. Cleveland on Wednesday, February 13, 2013, Col. Aaron Bank Hall Auditorium, Fort Bragg.
Attendees included Maj. Gen. Paul J. LaCamera, Command Sgt. Maj. George A. Bequer, Col. Robert A. Warburg, Command Sgt. Maj. David S. Randall, Col. Reginald J. Bostick, and Command Sgt. Maj. William Breeding.
During his address Lt. Gen. Charles T. Cleveland, commander, United States Special Operations Command, said that acts of valor are expected overseas, where soldiers know they can be called upon to be brave and heroic.
"It's special, though, when we understand that those values are carried out outside of service," he said. Furthermore, Lt. Gen. Cleveland added that Staff Sgt. Mitchell was an example for his fellow soldiers and civilians alike.
USASOC Command Sgt. Maj. George A. Bequer also praised Mitchell, saying his actions were "unnatural” and that “on that particular day, Staff Sgt. Mitchell forgot about himself and only thought about another person.“
His family, wife, Latoria Mitchell, mother, Marilyn Martinez-Mitchell, grandmother, Wyoma Gordon, and sons Deion and Mehkel, were all in attendance to view the awarding.
