FORWARD OPERATING BASE ANVIL, Afghanistan - A Security Forces Advise and Assist Team (SFAAT) from the Patriot Security Forces Advisory Brigade (SFAB) traveled to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Anvil in the Tarnek Province (JRTC) to meet with their Afghan National Army counterparts March 21.

The SFAAT is designed to loosely reflect a battalion staff and has a mission is to advise and assist Afghan National Security Forces as they transition from being partnered with coalition forces to being able to operate on their own.

The Patriot SFAB will field a number of SFAATs to help their Afghan counterparts improve their logistics, intelligence, maintenance, administration, rule of law, and training capabilities.

The teams have a very close working relationship with their Afghan counterparts.

“One of the first things that you need to do is build a rapport. It’s very important to build a rapport and just getting to know them. Building almost a friendship with them because that is the foundation most work relationships,” said Capt. Jose L. Perez, a Sustainment Advisor, 2nd Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment, Patriot SFAB.

The SFAAT team members must have a good understanding of both U.S. Army and Afghan Army technology.

“A SFAAT team member must be able to learn the Afghan system and how they operate,” said Perez. “We also need to see how well they use their system and how well they can operate those systems.”

The last thing that a SFAAT needs to do is crucial to the success of all SFAATs.

“The finale part, the bottom line, is helping the Afghans get better. If we can do those three things I think that we will be successful and it all starts with building a rapport,” said Perez.

When it is all said and done the SFAAT will train, asset, and advise their Afghan counterparts. “It’s about making the Afghan National Security Force better, so that they can give Afghanistan a peace that it deserves,” said Perez.
