CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – For almost 25 years, fans have lined up by the hundreds at theaters across the world to watch John McClane, a New York City detective, save the day by fighting one terrorist group or another. The latest installment, the fifth in the “Die Hard” action series, marks the first time McClane fights terrorists overseas.
More than 700 service members and civilians entered the Zone 1 Chapel, Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, Feb. 11 in anticipation of watching ‘A Good Day to Die Hard’, starring Bruce Willis during back-to-back screenings.
The premiere was made possible because of the planning and determination of the USO and 20th Century Fox. Dan Zimmerman, the movie’s editor, hand-carried a digital copy of the film and raced the clock by flying 18 hours to arrive in Kuwait on time for the premiere.
The general vibe throughout the auditorium was that of extreme enthusiasm. Before the premiere, Zimmerman spoke to the audience and let them know how much he appreciates their dedication and service.
“It’s always a real thrill when people enjoy what you do, enjoy the movie and kind of get lost in the moment,” said Zimmerman. “It definitely makes me feel like I gave back a little bit for everything you guys do.”
Thanks to this premiere, Chief Warrant Officer 2, James Hamilton, the mobility officer for the 75th Fires Brigade, 1st Infantry Division, can now say he has seen all of the ‘Die Hard’ movies.
“I think it’s awesome,” said Hamilton. “This is the first well known movie I’ve gotten the chance to see before everyone else while I’ve been deployed.”
Jeremy Wilcox, a USO entertainment tour producer, used his connections in Hollywood to bring a bit of showbiz to Camp Arifjan.
“I do a lot of different types of USO tours but this is my first movie premiere,” said Wilcox. “This was a fun thing to do and I’m glad that we could bring the movie out for the troops.”
