FORT STEWART, Ga. – Officials with Fort Stewart, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District, Winn Army Hospital, and prime contractor McCarthy Building Company broke ground on Phase 2 of a large-scale hospital expansion project Jan. 10, 2013.

With a contract value of $37 million, Phase 2 will add an additional two-story emergency department (43,637 square feet). The emergency department will include spaces for in-house ambulance dispatch and response, a trauma bay, three fast-track exam rooms, and seven urgent care exam rooms.

Phase 2 also includes renovation and expansion of the hospital dining facility, adding all new kitchen equipment, open dining space, and an expanded courtyard dining area. It will also double the size of the existing pharmacy, expand the Family and Internal Medicine Clinic, and add 234 new parking spaces.

All construction is designed to meet Silver-level criteria according to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system. Features include energy efficient heating, cooling and lighting systems.

Last January, the Corps broke ground on Phase 1, which was a $23.1 million expansion (65,000 square feet).

The overall expansion and renovation has an estimated completion of October 2016. The schedule requires relocating operational clinics to temporary facilities while construction takes place in those areas.

Opened in 1983, Winn Army Hospital now supports approximately 25,000 soldiers, families, retirees and civilians in the Fort Stewart community.
