Members of 2004’s Company C, 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division pose for a picture at the Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune stables during a reunion dinner for the company Aug. 10, 2013. In 2004, 1st Battalion, 6th Marines deployed with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit as the MEU’s ground combat element to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The battalion was one of the first in Afghanistan after 9/11 in support of OEF. Staff Sgt. Christian Boles, one of the company’s platoon sergeants, said his best memory of the deployment was seeing the corporals and sergeants under his command work together as fire teams in combat. “Their execution under enemy fire was superb,” said Boles. Lieutenant Col. Paul Merida (left) was Company C’s commanding officer, and now is 1st Battalion, 6th Marines’ battalion commander.
