Robert Devaney passes Fireman Jordan Gottfried a piece of cake at a ceremony celebrating the U.S. Coast Guard's 223rd birthday at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C., Aug. 2, 2013. The cake cutting ceremony is a time-honored tradition where the oldest military member passes along a piece of cake, symbolizing service traditions, to the youngest military member. Robert Devaney is the oldest Coast Guard member in residence at AFRH Washington, having served during World War II as a gunners mate. Established in 1851, AFRH Washington has been home to thousands of former enlisted military members and recently opened its doors to retired Coast Guard members as well.
