Members of Hawijah city's Sons of Iraq practice writing their names in a pilot literacy program envisioned by Gen. David Petraeus, the commanding general of Multi-National Force ? Iraq, and carried out by Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, which began June 15. The 4-month program will prepare a total of 500 SoIs in the four sub-districts of Hawijah how to read and write at a 3rd grade level in an effort to transition them in the Iraq security forces. It is a requirement of the ISF that a candidate be literate.
