A teacher demonstrates to a Sons of Iraq member how to form letters in the Hawijah city site of the pilot literacy program which opened its doors to 500 SoIs, June 15. Schools in four of the sub-districts of Hawijah, Iraq; Zaab, Abassi, Riyadh, and Hawijah city have been set up to accommodate around 125 students, divided into five classes. The teacher-to-student ratio in each classroom is 1 to 25. The classes will be held 5-days a week, 4-hours a day and is geared to prepare the SoIs for transition into the Iraq security forces. It is a requirement of the ISF that a candidate be literate. The program will be the model for a future national program.
