During a recent site-check of schools in Hawijah and Riyadh, Lt. Col. Christopher Vanek, commander, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regt., 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, met with the staff and visited with students at both sites for updates regarding the pilot literacy program underway there. The two schools visited are involved in a literacy program envisioned by Gen. David Petraeus, the commanding general of Multi-National Force - Iraq, and carried out by Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division. It is designed to prepare 500 Sons of Iraq members in the Hawijah district of northeastern Iraq for the application process that is necessary to be considered as candidates for the Iraqi Police and Army. It is a requirement of the ISF that a candidate be literate.
