Lt. Col. Christopher Vanek, commander, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division briefs Gen. David Petraeus, the commanding general of Multi-National Force - Iraq, during a walk through a market in Hawijah, Iraq, on the U.S. Army's 233rd birthday, June 14. "The Soldiers of 1-10th Mountain have transformed their area of operation, a feat that few thought possible a year ago," Petraeus told the commanders here. "Despite some tough losses, they have achieved historic results," he said. Once considered the Anbar of the North, the district of Hawijah has seen a 90 percent drop in violent activity against Iraqi security forces, the coalition force, and civilians in this northeastern region, located in the Kirkuk province.
