A Task Force Summit Soldier attempts to stop a goal attempt by a member of the Multaka soccer team. The Multaka team beat the Soldiers of 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 8-0, June 19. The Soldiers are stationed at Forward Operating Base McHenry in Hawijah, Iraq. They are meeting Iraqis on their soccer fields, playing Iraq's national sport, without body armor, in an attempt to show the "human-side of the U.S. Soldier and gain a mutual respect for one-another," Vanek said. The Hawijah district has seen a 90 percent decrease in violent attacks against its populace, security forces, and the CF since December with the beginning of the reconciliation process here. Although violence has struck home with the loss of three 1-87 Soldiers here in recent weeks, efforts such as these continue. "If losing soccer games brings an end to the violence, we'll lose every time," Vanek said.
