Capt. William Shields, executive officer, Company Delta, 1st Battalion, 87th Infantry Regt., 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division, speaks with a teacher at the Riyadh site of a pilot literacy program underway in the district of Hawijah during a recent spot-check. The program opened its doors to 500 Hawijah Sons of Iraq members, June 15. The literacy program was envisioned by Gen. David Petraeus, the commanding general of Multi-National Force - Iraq as way to transition SoI members into the Iraq security forces. It is designed to prepare the students for the application process for the Iraqi police and army. A candidate for the ISF must be literate in order to be considered.
