Rct. Jonathan Hemme, an 18-year-old native of Hope Valley, R.I., is currently training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C., in hopes of earning the title of United States Marine. Hemme is training with Platoon 3068, Lima Company, 3rd Recruit Training Battalion, and is scheduled to graduate Sept. 6, 2013. “I joined the Marine Corps to protect my country while bettering myself as a human being. I joined the military to carry on the family tradition; everyone in my lineage is in the military in some manner. I felt more inclined to join the Marine Corps because it is more of a brotherhood than just a branch,” said Hemme. Hemme graduated Chariho High School, Wood River Junction, R.I., in 2012. Approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
