"Life Jackets Worn, No One Mourns." Jennings Randolph Lake Park Ranger Joshua Gormley reinforces that Dam Water Safety message, May 16, 2026. Each spring, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Baltimore District schedules whitewater releases from Jennings Randolph Lake, sending flows between 850 and 1,000 cubic feet per second down seven miles of Class I, II and III rapids on the North Branch of the Potomac River. Gormley urges every paddler to gear up before launching: life jacket, helmet, cold water gear, and the buddy system — four things standing between you and 50-degree water that doesn't care how good a swimmer you are.
