Recruits of Papa Company, 4th Recruit Training Battalion, clear their masks of tear gas during chemical warfare defense training June 11, 2013, on Parris Island, S.C. Marine Corps recruits must properly clear their masks while exposed to tear gas, a nonlethal agent that causes watery eyes, respiratory system irritation and a burning sensation of the skin. This training ensures recruits know how to use their masks even when in a contaminated environment. Papa Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 2, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
