Sgt. Danny Roldan, a drill instructor of Platoon 1057, Charlie Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, watches his recruits perform a drill movement during the company's initial drill evaluation July 1, 2013, on Parris Island's main parade deck. Four drillmasters, who are experts on the Marine Corps Drill and Ceremonies Manual, graded Roldan, a 26-year-old native of Elizabeth, N.J., and his recruits on their bearing, attention to detail and ability to correctly perform the drill movements. Close-order drill is used during recruit training to instill discipline, teamwork and pride. Charlie Company is scheduled to graduate Aug. 23, 2013. Parris Island has been the site of Marine Corps recruit training since Nov. 1, 1915. Today, approximately 20,000 recruits come to Parris Island annually for the chance to become United States Marines by enduring 13 weeks of rigorous, transformative training.
