JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska (March 24, 2026) Patrick Zacher, a data scientist with Naval Health Research Center (NHRC), prepares cold-water immersion tubs for a cold stress study. Through cold water immersion studies, NHRC develops life-saving strategies that enable the warfighter to overcome the initial, lethal shock of entering frigid water. This research provides the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and joint forces with tools to maintain cognitive function and enhance survivability in the most extreme maritime environments. NHRC, part of Navy Medicine Research & Development, supports Navy, Marine Corps and joint U.S. warfighter readiness and lethality with research and development that delivers high-value, high-impact solutions to the health challenges U.S. military population faces on the battlefield, at-sea, home and abroad.
